NDA Exam - Check Exam Dates, Latest Updates

The UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) has released the NDA Exam II Result for the Written Test on 19th September 2022! The written test was conducted on 4th September 2022. A total number of 400 vacancies were released for admission to the Army, Navy, and Air Force wings of the NDA Exam for the 150th Course, and for the 112th Indian Naval Academy Course (INAC) commencing from 2nd July 2023.

Aspirants wish to attend the examination and this is a great opportunity for candidates. The applications were accepted till 7th June 2022 at 06:00 pm. The candidates who wish to crack the examination should know the basic details like eligibility criteria, selection process, how to apply, etc.

NDA Exam Highlights 

NDA Exam is one of the most buzzing defense entrance examinations in the country. This exam is carried out for admission to Army, Navy, and Air Force wings of the Indian Naval Academy Course (INAC) and National Defence Academy (NDA). 

NDA Exam is conducted twice annually in two tiers: written test and SSB Interview. UPSC shortlisted candidates with minimum qualifying marks are only called further for the SSB Interview round in Intelligence and Personality Test. NDA Full Form

NDA stands for National Defence Academy. The National Defence Academy is a tri-service military academy that trains young aspirants of the three wings of the Indian Defence Service. Established in the year 1954 UPSC NDA is located at Khadakwasla, Maharashtra, near Pune. Candidates who have qualified for their 10+2 exam are eligible to get trained at NDA. But for this, they have to clear the NDA selection process which is a written exam and SSB Interview.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the NDA Exam twice a year to recruit eligible candidates as officers in the National Defence Services. After qualifying for the selection process candidates go through training for a period of three years. After the completion of their training candidates are commissioned as Officers in the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The Army cadets are sent to the Indian Military Academy (IMA) at Dehradun, Air force cadets are sent to the Air Force Academy (AFA) at Dundigal, Hyderabad, and Naval cadets are sent to the Indian Naval Academy (INA) at Ezhimala, Kerala for their further training.

NDA Eligibility Criteria

In order to apply for the NDA exam, candidates must satisfy all the criteria of eligibility. Only eligible candidates will be allowed to appear for the examination. These criteria are expressed in terms of 3 points namely, nationality, age limit, educational qualification, and others. The NDA Eligibility Criteria is presented in the following sub-sections.

A. Nationality

The applicant must compulsorily be

  1. A citizen of India, or
  2. A subject of Nepal, or
  3. A person of Indian origin who has migrated with the intention of permanently settling in India from
    1. Pakistan
    2. Burma
    3. Sri Lanka
    4. Kenya
    5. Uganda
    6. the United Republic of Tanzania
    7. Zambia
    8. Malawi
    9. Zaire
    10. Ethiopia
    11. Vietnam

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii) and (iii), above shall be a person in whose favor a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.

B. Educational Qualification

(i) For Army Wing of National Defence Academy—12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

(ii) For Air Force and Naval Wings of National Defence Academy and for the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy—12th Class pass with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent conducted by a State Education Board or a University. Candidates who are appearing in the 12th Class under the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination can also apply for this examination.

C. Age Limit 

The candidates applying for the NDA Exam (II) should have been born

  • Not earlier than 02nd January 2004 and
  • Not later than 01st January 2007. 

Candidates should note that only the date of birth as recorded in the Matriculation/ Secondary School Examination Certificate available or an equivalent certificate on the date of submission of applications will be accepted by the Commission and no subsequent request for its change will be considered or granted. Also, candidates should be unmarried and they cannot marry until the completion of their training period.

A candidate who marries subsequent to the date of his application though successful at this or any subsequent Examination will not be selected for training. A candidate who marries during training shall be discharged and will be liable to refund all expenditures incurred on him by the Government.

NDA Selection Process

The candidates who wish to join the prestigious National Defence Academy will have to undergo an intricate process of selection. The process can broadly divide into two stages namely written examination and SSB examination. The SSB stands for Service Selection Board. The written exam will consist of two papers i.e. Mathematics and General Ability Test.

The SSB examination will also consist of two sections of selection. The stages of selection are qualifying in nature. Hence, the NDA selection process, in a nutshell, will be as follows.

NDA Exam Pattern

The candidates must understand the exam pattern in detail in order to prepare for the UPSC NDA Examination. The examination pattern for both the stages of selection has been discussed below. Both the stages of selection will have two sub-stages. Each of them has been clearly explained in simple terms.

A. Written examination

  • The papers will consist of objective-type questions only.
  • The question paper will consist of two subjects i.e Mathematics and General Ability Test. The General Ability Test will consist of two parts i.e English and General Knowledge. The General Knowledge part will include topics like current affairs, history, general science, etc. This part will further consist of five different sections. 
  • Each paper will have a duration of 2.5 hours. 
  • The maximum marks will be 300 and 600 respectively. 
  • For every wrong answer, 1/3rd marks will be deducted.

B. SSB examination (Intelligence and Personality Test)

The SSB exam will further consist of two stages,i.e. Stage I and Stage II. In this stage, the overall personality of the candidate is judged. This is done by three people i.e The Interviewing Officer (IO), Group Testing Officer (GTO), and the Psychologist. The tests taken in the SSB are taken to figure out the presence/absence of Officer Like Qualities and candidates' trainability. The two stages of the SSB Examination are as follows.

Stage I: Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests are Picture Perception * Description Test (PP&DT). The candidates will be shortlisted based on a combination of performance in the OIR Test and PP&DT.

Stage II: Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests, and the Conference.

The SSB interview is 900 marks and the total marks including the written test and the SSB Interview are 1800.

NDA Exam Guidelines 2022

List of guidelines that should be followed during NDA Exam 2022:

  • Candidates must bring their UPSC NDA Admit Cards or else they won’t be allowed to enter the exam hall. 
  • Candidates can bring one photo-identity evidence in addition to their admit card.
  • Carry a clipboard or hardboard and a black ballpoint pen.
  • Within the examination center, no books, notes, loose sheets, electronic or other types of calculators, mathematical and drawing instruments, log tables, stencils of charts, slide rules, test booklets, or rough sheets are permitted.
  • Candidates who are caught copying or stealing face serious consequences.

NDA Exam Application Fee

The candidates belonging to the SC/ST category will not have to pay any examination fee. Application Form Correction for NDA Exam

Applicants should fill out the UPSC NDA Exam application form with the utmost care. They must verify & recheck the information they have filled in before final submission. Once the application is subjected, it cannot be edited. The UPSC has not provided any means for the application form correction, at least as of now.

NDA Exam Salary 2022

The Union Public Service Commission's Official Notification contains an extensive salary structure. During the training cycle, the Cadets will be paid a fixed stipend of Rs. 56,100/- for the duration of their training in service academies (i.e. during their training period at IMA). The pay in the pay matrix of the Officer commissioned shall be set in the first Cell of Level 10 after good training. The Pay scale will differ from one post to another and will be mentioned in the official guidelines.

The result for the NDA II Exam is released on 19th September 2022. The candidates can follow the steps which are mentioned below to download the result.

Step 1: Candidates should visit the official website for UPSC to download the UPSC NDA Result.

Step 2: A PDF with complete UPSC NDA result information will appear on the candidate's screen after clicking on the link.

Step 3: The Roll Numbers of the candidates who have applied are included in the PDF file. To quickly locate your roll number, click “Ctrl+F” and type in your roll number. Your roll number will appear on the screen if you have qualified.
